        Apostates and Asylum

Ana Gonzalez was born in Spain and graduated in Employment Law at the University of A Coruña. She moved to the UK in 1994, qualifying as a solicitor in 2003.

Ana will talk to us about her experience representing apostates in asylum applications over the last 10 years. She will discuss how apostates fit into the

Refugee Convention and the difficulty faced by vulnerable asylum seekers in the asylum process.

Having trained in asylum, nationality and public law, she now practises in immigration and asylum work, and has interests in human rights and European Law. Ana

is an internationally recognised expert in gender and sexuality-based asylum claims as well as having extensive expertise in representing individuals from

vulnerable, marginalised client groups such as victims of human trafficking, apostates and transgender individuals. Ana is frequently instructed by Local

Authorities all over the Greater London area to act for children and adults in their care. She has also conducted cases in the Supreme Court and the Court

of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg.

Ana worked at the well-respected Refugee Legal Centre. She has been a guest speaker at the London School of Economics and is a regular speaker at conferences

on human trafficking. Ana has recently been involved in advising EEA nationals on Brexit at a number of public events including a session at the Houses of

Parliament 3rd July 2018. She is also a volunteer lawyer for UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group as well as for Micro Rainbow International.

Campaigning locally for a Secular Britain.

Who we are and what we believe:

We are a group of people based in and around the Nottingham area who support the idea of a secular society, in which people of all religions, and none, should be treated equally.

We support the Charter of the National Secular Society and meet regularly to discuss secular issues; listen to guest speakers; organise campaigns, have debates and the occasional social evening.

Secularism Protects:

We are not anti-religion. We oppose discrimination against religions and discrimination by religions equally but we believe that religion is a private matter for individuals and that the privileged position of religious organisations and the self-interest of religious leaders is one that should be challenged.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING YOU

Please have a look at the website and, if you like what you see, why not come along and join us at one of our meetings? For more information or any general inquiries please contact nottinghamsecularsociety@yahoo.com
